The Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean and the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO (CNCU), in collaboration with the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), began a series of technical workshops aimed at facilitating the access of Cuban cultural institutions to the assistance mechanisms UNESCO places at the disposal of States Members in the field of Culture.

The initial cycle of this training, which took place on 19-23 March 2012 at ACNU headquarters, included capacity-building in results-based management, the preparation of projects, as well as thematic workshops on the funding mechanisms of the UNESCO Conventions, one of which was dedicated to the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

The major contribution of culture to development, as well as the objectives, main aspects and approaches of the Convention on World Heritage were presented, including an explanation of the World Heritage Fund and the types and characteristics of the funding mechanisms for international assistance to World Heritage. Fernando Brugman, Coordinator of the UNESCO Havana Culture Programme, was in charge of a session especially focused on the analysis of the Preparation of projects, results-based management and funding mechanisms to obtain a better result in international cooperation.

Participating in this first edition were 40 representatives from different cultural institutions in the country. During the 2012-2013 biennium other cycles will be organized enabling a better assistance to all Cuban cultural entities.

This activity is inscribed in the main lines of action of the UNESCO Cultural Programme for the biennium, aimed at promoting the role of culture in development at the world, regional and national levels, thereby facilitating its better integration into development policies and in joint programming activities with the States Members of the Organization.
