EiCTV is one of the main partners of UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean in relation to the office's programmes related to the creative industries, especially cinema, as well as the preservation, digitalisation and democratisation of the sound and video archives of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Founded on 15 December 1986, as an affiliate of the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema (fnCl), its founders (namely the Colombian writer and journalist Gabriel García Márquez, the Argentine poet and filmmaker Fernando Birri, and the Cuban director and theorist Julio García Espinosa) were trying to start a 'School of Three Worlds', for students from Latin America, Africa and Asia. Conceived as a school for artistic training, EiCTV put a particular philosophy into practice: rather than using professional teachers, it decided to use professional filmmakers, who are able to convey their knowledge that they have tested in practice – real life experience, which is constantly being updated and renewed.
Since then, thousands of professionals and students, from more than 50 countries, have converted the School into a place for cultural diversity and of multinational reach, which can be better described as a School of All the Worlds.
UNESCO is connected to EiCTV through the project "
Cameras of Diversity", jointly promoting the diversity of cultural expressions and the creative industries in the region. Capacity-building exercises, theoretical workshops in relation to the use of new audiovisual technologies, gender workshops for campesina leaders and an increase in local-content audiovisual production are some of the areas where the two institutions collaborate.
In the framework of the promotion of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, students of EiCTV, under the coordination of the television and documentary teachers, have worked in the creation of videos and reports that symbolise the work of UNESCO in relation to the creative industries and cultural expressions.
EiCTV has also worked with UNESCO Havana's Communication and Information sector in relation to the conservation and preservation of the audiovisual records of the School and of the region, and in the creation of a media centre for Latin American and Caribbean audiovisual production.
