From 15 to 17 September 2010, the Caribbean Sub-regional Workshop on the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention will be held in Havana, Cuba, jointly organized by the UNESCO Offices in Havana, Cuba, and in Kingston, Jamaica.
The workshop aims at strengthening capacities in the States Parties of the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, thereby contributing to its efficient implementation at the national level, based on the Caribbean Capacity Building Programme (CCBP).
The CCBP, conceived as a long-term training programme, was endorsed by the World Heritage Committee in 2004 as part of the Caribbean Action Plan for World Heritage. It is composed of five training modules on the Application of the World Heritage Convention, Tourism Management in Heritage Sites, Risk Preparedness, the Management of Cultural Landscapes, as well as the Management of Historic Cities.
In the Caribbean area, together with the existence of 14 cultural and 6 natural sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, there are 11 Biosphere Reserves protected under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. In addition, 5 Caribbean expressions form part of the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. From 1997 until the present, 13 collections and documents from the Caribbean have been inscribed in the Memory of the World Register.
