In the framework of the 20th International Book Fair Cuba 2011 and the strategic project Training/Capacity-building workshops on the electronic book 2011, the Regional Centre for Book Promotion in Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLALC) offered the workshop "The electronic book: Finally, what you wanted to know. Tools to understand what it is, how it is done and what it is used for", on 18-19 February 2011.
Based in Bogota, Colombia, CERLALC was the first UNESCO Category-2 Centre established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation 40 years ago. During this time it has done outstanding work in the region, in accordance with the guidelines of its mission. Special mention should be made of CERLALC's efforts regarding the protection of intellectual creation, the promotion of book production and circulation, the advancement of reading and writing, as well as the need for the members of the book value chain to keep informed about the convergence observed between the digital media and the new forms of book promotion and distribution.
The event was inaugurated by Mr Fernando Zapata López, CERLACL Director, and Ms Tatiana Villegas, Culture specialist at the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, based in Havana, Cuba.
During the two-day event, attended by more than 25 editors from the city of Havana, the participants discussed questions such as: What is the electronic book? How to work and what to do with it? What is it used for and how can it form part of my activity?
CERLALC designed this Seminar/Capacity-building workshop aimed at offering concepts and tools to be used by the participants to undertake, consolidate and develop strategies that will enable them to understand the context, formulate projects to diversify their editorial portfolio and create new opportunities for the book industry from a digital perspective.
Given the success of the pilot workshop held in Havana, it is expected that the experience will be extended to other countries in the region.
