Culture and art contributing to development: resourceful Chilean initiative
5 March 2015/ UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean/CENTEX
In the Chilean city of Valparaíso a resourceful initiative has been launched by the Extension Centre of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CNCA): the Puelagalán Factory.
The project is born of the need expressed by CENTEX officials to form part of the actions taken in the city to contribute to the restoration and reconstruction of the homes destroyed by the fire which devastated Valparaíso in April 2014.
The Centre placed at the disposal of the project a space, where the Puelagalán Factory was established, symbolically named after a flower of Valparaíso that heals wounds. The Puelagalán is a place where art and culture converge, in order to make, with the support of the community and numerous volunteers, different household items for the families that were affected by the fire. It is, in the opinion of its organizers and collaborators, concrete proof of how culture can be the driver of important changes and community work in favour of the community.
We invite you to learn more about the project through the audio-visual available here.
