Costa Rica: Capacity-building workshops for municipal cultural managers |

On 29 January 2015, at the UNESCO Office in San José, began the first of six capacity-building workshops of the members of the Inter-Municipal Culture Network (RECIM). The training will approach the conventions using cross-cutting themes: “Education and training of cultural managers and the public”, “Sustainable Tourism for local development with identity”, “Youth, creativity and the prevention of violence”, “Culture and Communication for Development”, “The Environment and Culture”.
The aim of the first workshop was to present the wide range of tools UNESCO proposes for cultural managers and different publics. Cultural managers were thus able to have access to handbooks and familiarize themselves with the instruments. The Handbook on Community Cultural Management, the publication “Museums and communities, allies in the active preservation of heritage and local development: self-evaluation, self-improvement and certification” and the six Workbooks for Houses of Culture were presented. In addition, tools for public use such as the Heritage Kit, the Diversities video game, the four Easy Guides to the Dissemination of Cultural Rights and the set From Oblivion to Memory, on the history of Afro-descendants in Latin America were also presented.
The second workshop, on 6 February, was dedicated to the theme of Education for the implementation of the UNESCO Conventions ratified by Costa Rica. The Heritage Kit (World Heritage in Young Hands) and Diversities (the Creativity Game) as well as didactic materials on Underwater Cultural Heritage were presented.
The third workshop, held on 16 March, dealt with the theme of sustainable tourism for local development with identity. The Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the United Nations World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Programme, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Charter and the First Conference on Tourism and Culture in February 2015 were analyzed.
During the months of April, May and June, the workshops for cultural managers of this Inter-Municipal Culture Network will continue.
