The University Centre of Cultural Industries (CUICA), an institution attached to the National Avellaneda University (Buenos Aires, Argentina), was launched on Monday, 8 June. The event took place at the National Bicentennial House, Avellaneda, and counted with the presence of some 400 persons.
CUICA, under the direction of Mr Rodolfo Hamawi, wishes to contribute to the University’s role as an active social actor in the cultural ecosystem. To do so, it has identified, among others, the following objectives: to foster specific academic and professional training, encourage an interdisciplinary approach to research, favour innovative projects that can enhance the value of national production, as well as promote collaborative instances in cultural production.
In this context, the UNESCO Montevideo Office was invited to the presentation of the special edition of the United Nations Creative Economy Report (2013) entitled “Widening Local Development Pathways”, co-published by UNESCO and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
With this publication, UNESCO seeks to place creativity and culture as a priority for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The Creative Economy is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in terms of income generation, job creation and export earnings.
This document includes case studies, statistical analyses and a proposal for indicators that show, quantitatively and quantitatively, the value of creativity and culture as an engine for sustainable and inclusive development, not only because it is considered one of the most rapidly expanding sectors in the world economy, but also because of its significant non-monetary value which contributes to inclusive social development, dialogue and understanding among peoples.
