Director-General in Cuba to take part in the 3rd Meeting of Ministers of Culture of CELAC

From 17 to 19 September, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is travelling to Cuba to participate in the 3rd Meeting of Ministers of Culture of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). The Director-General will take part in the official inauguration of the Meeting, held on 18 September, alongside the Minister of Culture of Cuba, H.E. Julian González, and the Minister of Culture of Ecuador and representative of the Pro-tempore Presidency of CELAC, H.E Guillaume Long.

The meeting will be preceded by the workshop for the discussion and validation of the UNESCO Work Plan for Culture in the region, which proposes concrete actions to be developed at the national and regional levels during the 2016-2021 period. The main objective of the workshop, to be opened by the Director-General, is to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will be adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.

While in Cuba, the Director-General is expected to meet a number of high level government representatives, including H.E. Julián González Toledo, Minister of Culture, H.E. Bruno Rodríguez Parilla, Minister of External Relations, H.E. Ena Elsa Velázquez , Minister of Education, and H.E. Rodolfo Alarcón Ortiz, Minister of Higher Education. The Director-General will also meet with Mr Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios, President of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO and representative of Cuba to the Executive Board.

The Director-General will take part in an event in honor of Dr Eusebio Leal, who was in charge of the restoration of the Palacio del Segundo Cabo, in Havana, with the support of UNESCO and funding from the European Union. Dr Leal is a reference in the field of cultural heritage management and an advocator for the inclusion of culture in the social and economic development agenda.
