UNiTE Artists Network grows in Cuba

On Tuesday, 13 October, some 20 creators from Cuba, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil and Spain received their certificate as members of the UNiTE Artists Network. The campaign is an initiative launched by United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon to put an end to violence against women and girls.
At a ceremony held at the Cuban Art Factory, a cultural centre in Havana, artists signed their membership certificates in the presence of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cuba, Myrta Kaulard, UNICEF representative in Cuba, Ana Lucía d’Emilio, UNiTE campaign coordinator, Dalia Acosta, and UNESCO Havana gender focal point, Pablo Castilla, among other activists against gender violence.
The new members of the Network include singers and composers such as Dulce Pontes (Portugal), Jaramar Soto (Mexico), Badi Assad (Brazil), Mayte Martín (Spain), who are visiting Cuba to participate in the Human Voices Festival organised by the famous Cuban musician Leo Brouwer.
Also joining the Network are the musician Equis Alfonso and the Cuban Art Factory he directs; the Havana Chamber Orchestra and its director Daiana García, La Ruega Productions headed by Josué García, photographer Iván Soca, composer and pianist Aldo López Gavilán, musicians Carlos, Eme and Ele Alfonso and the group Synthesis, audiovisual producer Andy Ruiz Muñoz, and journalists Dagné Reloba and Yenys Laura Prieto, among others.
A special part of the ceremony was the moment when the girls Andrea and Adriana López Gavilán joined the network, the first Cuban girls to form part of this initiative.
They have all have made sustained contributions to the actions of the UNiTE campaign in Cuba, and have given their support to projects such as the initiative All against the Tide, headed by Rochy, and the work of related organisations such as the Ibero-American and African Masculinities Network, coordinated by sociologist Julio César González Pagés.
UN Resident Coordinator in Cuba, Myrta Kaulard, declared she was pleased to see so many persons joining the Network and thanked the artists for their contribution to the elimination of all sorts of violence against women and girls. And added, “I am certain that what you do is very important for all those women who have experienced violence.”
In the final moments of the ceremony, Kaulard conferred the UNiTE award for Commitment to equality and No to gender violence to Cuban artist Rochy Ameneiros, who since 2012 “has contributed to multiply the messages in favour of No to violence against women and girls not only with her art, but also through her participation in workshops and community actions, as well her use of the mass media”.
The UNiTE award for commitment to equality and No to gender violence is being conferred since 2015 to institutions, organizations, networks, national personalities and initiatives making a significant contribution to the promotion of equality and No to gender-based violence.
On 10 October, Cuban filmmaker Lizette Vila and the Palomas Project also received this award.
