The Dominican Republic hosts CELAC meeting

The Fourth Meeting of Regional and Subregional Integration Mechanisms of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) was held on 19 and 20 October in the capital of the Dominican Republic, organized by the current CELAC Pro Tempore Presidency, the Republic of Ecuador.
Participating in the meeting were representatives of regional integration agencies such as the Central American Integration System (SICA), the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), the Latin American Social Sciences Institute (FLACSO) and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America (ALBA), among others, as well as of international organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Representing UNESCO at the meeting was Olga Rufins, National Programme Officer for Culture at the Organization’s Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Also taking part in the event were delegates from more than twenty CELAC Member States.
The Minister of Foreign Relations of the Dominican Republic, architect Andrés Navarro, was in charge of the opening and closing ceremonies.
“This is the fourth working meeting in favour of changes in a globalized world, for we are motivated by the need not only to face the many problems we have in common, but also to commit ourselves to the process of designing a new global economic order. We can now find new ways to address the changes on the international scene and complement CELAC’s work,” stated the high-ranking official in his opening words.
In turn, the Deputy Coordinator of CELAC’s Pro Tempore Presidency, the Ecuadorean Daniel Ortega, declared that the meeting is a mechanism for dialogue and concerted political action on a wide range of regional and subregional development themes aimed at finding a solution for a population of over 600 million Latin Americans who live in conditions of poverty, marginality and hunger.
The meeting identified important lines of action for economic-commercial, productive, social, cultural and institutional development, with the deepening of the agreements reached during the third work meeting held on 2-3 December 2013 in the city of San José, Costa Rica.
“We are optimistic in the sense that 2015 will end as a year of transcendental integrationist and global agreements that will benefit more than 600 million inhabitants in CELAC’s 33 member countries. The region is headed towards more promising horizons for its population”, said Navarro as he praised the decided and highly positive participation of the delegates and guests participating in the working meeting.
This international event forms part of the Dominican Republic’s preparation to assume the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in January 2020.
