Honduras celebrates 100th Anniversary of its National Theatre and 70th Anniversary of UNESCO

The Government of Honduras celebrated two important anniversaries to pay tribute to the role of the National Theatre in the country’s cultural life, and UNESCO’s role in its ongoing support for a culture of peace and sustainable development in Honduras and the world.

Citizens of Tegucigalpa went to the National Theatre to listen to the Central American and Caribbean Youth Orchestra (OJCA), which has gathered this year 80 musicians from ten countries of Middle America, Europe and the Caribbean.
In his speech, Reinaldo Sánchez, Minister of the Presidency of Honduras, explained the importance and the role of culture in the promotion of peace and development. He stressed the importance that his government has given to cultural industries and new talent.
Roberto Zacapa, Deputy Minister of the Presidency, declared that the celebration of UNESCO’s anniversary also means the celebration of humanistic and universal values.
The celebration was organized by the Department of Culture and the Arts of the Government of Honduras, with the support of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Goethe Institute and the Choral Philharmonic Association of Honduras.
Fidelia Molina, Executive Director of Culture and the Arts, who was in charge of this event, explained that it contributed to the integration of the countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) , more specifically, through the exchange among young people in the region.
On behalf of UNESCO, Charaf Ahmimed congratulated the government on the centennial of its National Theatre and reiterated UNESCO’s support based on the progress made and the commitment to work on the challenges ahead in education, science, culture and communication.
At the end of the ceremony, the Minister of the Presidency presented an award to UNESCO in recognition “For its 70th Anniversary and its ongoing support for the maintenance of peace and security in Honduras and the world”.
