Reopening of cultural institutions in Cuba: 2008 to June 2012

  Siguiente Vista de Noticias
In 2008 Cuba was badly affected by two high-intensity hurricanes in less than 10 days: Gustav and Ike. After the damage caused by the first, mainly in the western part of the island, the second hurricane added its own destruction, affecting the whole country, but with the most serious damage in the provinces of Camagüey, Guantánamo, Las Tunas, Holguín, Pinar del Río and the special municipality of the Isla de la Juventud.

Confronted with this situation, the Kingdom of Norway, a nation which understands the value of culture on the island, offered its support to UNESCO, and assisted the Government of the Republic of Cuba with its funds as a way of responding to the damaged which the hurricanes had caused to cultural institutions.

Thanks to the goodwill of the counterparts, once the project was finalised in June 2012 many cultural institutions which benefitted from the funds, along the whole length of the island, have been able to restore their installations, furniture and equipment. But the impact of this project has transcended the physical realm, signifying a revitalisation of the cultural and recreational life of the population, enabling cultural and educational activities to be scheduled. Community leaders have organised and participated in all of these initiatives and actions.
