UNESCO and Panama sign memorandum of understanding on cultural heritage
30 October 2015/ UNESCOPRESS

The Vice-President and Foreign Relations Minister of Panama, Isabelle de Saint Malo de Alvarado, and UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, signed today at UNESCO headquarters a memorandum of understanding to the mutual benefit of both parties concerned, which envisages the sending of Panamanian professionals in support of the activities of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre.

These professionals will be able to put into practice at a later date the experience gained at UNESCO in the protection and management of Panama’s cultural sites.

The document was signed at the end of a bilateral meeting during which the Vice-President and the Director-General spoke of the need to ensure the long-term protection of the Archaeological Site of Panamá Viejo and the Historic District of Panama, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997. Isabelle de Saint Malo de Alvarado also expressed her appreciation for UNESCO’s support in safeguarding Panama’s underwater cultural heritage.

In 2001, Panama was the first country to ratify the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

On her visit, Isabelle de Saint Malo de Alvarado was accompanied by Flavio Méndez, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Panama to UNESCO, Gina Latoni, advisor, and Analuisa Bustamante, General Director of Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Relations.
