19 July 2007/ Museo del Hombre Dominicano
On the 13th of July, 2007 was inaugurated at the Museo del Hombre Dominicano in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, the exhibition "Mother Africa: The Concept of Maternity in Traditional African Sculpture".
The exhibition is the result of a joint effort of the Secretariat of State for Culture of the Dominican Republic and the Museo del Hombre Dominicano (Museum of Dominican Man) with Kerr Museum Productions of New York. The exhibition includes fifty-nine traditional ritual artifacts from different African regions that evidence the importance of maternity in the African continent.
According to anthropologist Carlos Hernández Soto, director of the Museum, "[the exhibition] evokes a triple concept: that of maternity in connection with myths and rites; that of Africa as the birthplace of Humanity, and the concept of African roots present in Dominican culture, and which are frequently forgotten or disregarded in the Dominican Republic."
The exhibition will be open until October 12, 2007.
