| Celebrations in Cuba for the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development in the International Year for People of African Descent

The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean sponsored the comprehensive celebrations in Cuba on the 21st of May, World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, organized jointly with the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO and the Cuban Association for the United Nations.
The celebration is especially significant in 2011, proclaimed by the United Nations as International Year for People of African Descent, therefore, the festivities will be dedicated to the people of African descent. The central activity was a concert organized by the UNESCO Regional Office together with the Office of the Historian of Havana and co-sponsored by the above-mentioned institutions. The National Folk Company and the Compañía Yoruba Andabo, performed during the concert at the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, in the afternoon on the 21st of May.
The celebrations began in April, and will continue until the end of the year all around the country with plays, lectures, panels, seminars, presentations of several publications, film screenings, exhibitions and various other activities in the municipal Houses of Cultures, including important events such as the International Colloquium Cultural Diversity in the Caribbean, organized by Casa de las Américas from 16 to 20 May, and the III International Workshop We come from the Caribbean, organized by the Caribbean Association of Cuba on 19 May.
